What should a rugged laptop be able to withstand?

Shock and drop resistance

Rugged laptops must be shock and drop resistant. That is why they are equipped with an extra strong housing that can take a beating. Both the inside and the outside are shock resistant. So you don’t have to worry about breaking the screen, motherboard, or other internal chips.

Dust, sand, and water

A lot of dust is released in factories and warehouses. When working in these types of locations, it can quickly happen that dust enters the laptop’s fans, causing them to become clogged. Rugged laptops are equipped with passive cooling or ventilation with extra fine filters. As a result, the chance of dust and sand ending up in your fans is considerably smaller, and the rugged laptop will therefore last longer. In addition, a rugged laptop must of course also be waterproof. Water and electronic devices do not go well together. Rugged laptops can have different certifications. The rugged laptops from our partners Zebra, Getac, Durabook, and Panasonic can have the following certifications (depending on the model):

IP65: Rugged laptops with IP65 are fully resistant to dust, sand, and other external particles. Laptops with this certification are also able to withstand 12.5 liters of water per minute.

IP66: Rugged laptops that have the IP66 certificate are also 100% resistant to dust, sand, and other external particles. The internal hardware of these laptops is vacuum sealed, so you can be sure that it stays clean. Devices with this certification can also withstand water pressure very well. They can withstand a flow of 100 liters of water per minute and withstand high-pressure water jets of up to 12.5 mm wide.

MIL-STD-810: When a rugged laptop has this certification, it means that they meet military standards. This means:

They can operate under extreme temperatures. From -32°C to 65°C for more than 4 hours. They can also withstand rapid temperature fluctuations.
They are resistant to low pressure. In this way they still work at an altitude of 15 km. This allows the laptops to be used in mountains and airplanes.
They can withstand a fall of up to 1.5 meters.
They are resistant to salt spray. This will not affect the internal electrical components.
They are resistant to heavy vibration.

ATEX: ATEX certified rugged laptops may be used in environments with a risk of explosion. This includes storage areas for highly flammable goods. ATEX certified rugged laptops are designed in such a way that no sparking can occur.
